WOW International Day of The Girl
Friday 11th October was International Day of the Girl. For the 2nd time, I came to participate in a speed mentoring session created by the WOW Foundation, with 13-18 year old girls from across London.
This time I had my good friend Karen Arthur, Fashion Designer & Creator of the #wearyourhappy movement.
It was an early start..had to sign in at 7:30 am!!! This cold of mine was festering all week but that morning it cut me some slack.
As well as meeting some lovely girls who braved the event after hearing some devastating news about a friend, I met some lovely women who came to mentor too. Basically we take over the London Eye, with a mixture of mentors and Girls in each pod and we speed mentor for 15 mins. We each spoke to 3-4 girls each.
Afterwards we all returned to the National Theatre where the WOW Founder Jude Kelly, was in conversation with Clara Amfo. It was nice that the girls were included. The first time it was just us mentors hearing Jo Brand speak. It was good but this was so much better.
I cannot tell you how amazing it was to have such a mixture of people and professions gather in one place and all…And I mean all of us were on the same page…wanting to share our knowledge and motivation. It demonstrates to me that uniting each other regardless of our differences is actually possible…because we were all there for the same goal.
To motivate the girls.
I’m hopeful. The girls in our pod were switched on. They are from Stratford and have witnessed things they shouldn’t. They are channeling these experiences into movement with many of them having the end goal to return and give back to their communities.
I hope I can return next year because it is one the best things I have done and it motivates and reminds me of what I am truly capable of.
The WOW Festival is in March 2020. 100% recommend. Find out more here
Ciao for now.
